Understanding Wig Density: How Much Hair Do You Really Need?

When clients try on a wig for the first time, a common reaction is, "It feels like too much hair!" This usually comes down to a misunderstanding of wig density. Density refers to how thick or thin the hair is on the wig cap.

    Standard Densities

Wig density is usually expressed as a percentage. 130% is considered medium/standard density and mimics the average head of natural hair. 150% is medium-heavy, offering a fuller, more voluminous look. 180% is heavy density, often used for very long styles or theatrical wigs.

    Matching Your Natural Look

The goal is usually to match the density you had before experiencing hair loss. If you have always had fine, thin hair, a 150% density wig will look unnatural on you. Conversely, if you are used to thick, luscious locks, a 130% wig might feel too sparse.

    The Power of Thinning

If you find a wig you love but it feels too heavy, don't worry! A professional wig stylist can thin out the density using specialized shears, removing bulk from the underneath layers so the wig lays flatter and looks more realistic.
